The new Target replaces the city’s second Walmart store, which closed late last year at the same location.
NORWALK, CT — A sign for a new Target store was recently put up at 680 Connecticut Avenue in Norwalk, and store officials teased a grand opening date will be announced in the near future.
The new Target is planned to open in the large space formerly occupied by the city’s second Walmart store, which closed back in November.
In an email Friday, a Target spokesperson confirmed plans to open a Target store at the location.
“We’re excited to bring an easy, affordable and convenient shopping experience to new guests in the Norwalk community with this new Target store,” the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson also teased more details about the store, including an opening date, would be announced in the near future.
“As we get closer to opening the store, we’ll have more specific details to share,” the spokesperson said, “including how the shopping experience will be tailored to serve local guests and the grand opening date.”
A request for comment from the city was not immediately returned Friday.
Construction walls, as well as the new sign, were up at the future Target store space Thursday afternoon. The Connecticut Avenue shopping plaza also includes a Home Goods department store.
Plans for the new store, which will measure approximately 117,215 square feet, were first submitted to the city’s Planning and Zoning Department in March 2023.
In August 2023, Norwalk spokesperson Michelle Woods Matthews said Target’s permitting team had made the city aware they were in the process of submitting their construction plans for their zoning and building permits and had been in touch with Planning and Zoning regarding signage.
That same month, Walmart confirmed the Connecticut Avenue store and its pharmacy would close by early November.
Walmart continues to operate its store at 650 Main Avenue in Norwalk, near the Wilton border.
Mayor Harry Rilling said in an earlier statement he was sad to see any Walmart employees lose their jobs as a result of the closing, however the city’s Business, Development and Tourism Department would work diligently with Target to try and connect those who may experience job loss from the store’s closure with new employment opportunities at the planned Target.
