Born Anthony Leonard Platt, Unk’s death was confirmed on Friday by Korey “Big Oomp” Roberson, founder of Big Oomp Records, the label that signed Unk in 2000.
His wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, also shared the heartbreaking news in an emotional Facebook post.
The cause of death has not been disclosed, though a source told The New York Post that Unk had been dealing with “health complications”.
Fans may recall that in 2009, the rapper suffered a heart attack, which he attributed to a grueling lifestyle of nonstop touring, poor eating habits, and substance use.

The album’s breakout singles, ‘Walk It Out’ and ‘2 Step’, became cultural phenomena, with the former reaching the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spawning a remix featuring André 3000 and Jim Jones.
In 2008, Unk dropped his sophomore album, 2econd Season, which peaked at No. 15 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
A close family friend reflected on Unk’s enduring impact: “Unk never stopped touring and performing. No matter where you were, when you heard ‘Walk It Out,’ you were guaranteed to start dancing. ‘Walk It Out’ and ‘2 Step’ remained two of the hottest songs on the planet. They will forever be considered legendary.”
The friend added: “Unk was active in the studio up until the very end. Music was always near and dear to his heart.”
Praise From Fellow Artists
DJ Unk’s work was celebrated not only by fans but also by major figures in music. André 3000, who lent his voice to the remix of “Walk It Out,” once said in a 2023 interview: “The beat was so jammin’ that you just wanted to get on it.”
He called the opportunity to contribute to the song a “blessing.”
Out thoughts go out to Unk’s family, friends, and fans at this time.
