John Amos, ‘Good Times,’ ‘Coming To America,’ Roots’ Actor, Dies At 84

 

John Amos died on August 21 at the age of 84.

His son, Kelly Christopher “KC,” confirmed that he died of natural causes.

Amos boasted a celebrated career on the big and small screen that included ‘Roots,’ ‘Coming to America,’ ‘Good Times,’ ‘The West Wing,’ ‘Die Hard 2,’ and more.

Actor John Amos died on August 21. News of his passing had not been disclosed until this week and was confirmed by his son, who also said that Amos ultimately died in Los Angeles of natural causes. He was 84 years old when he passed away.

“It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned,” shared his son, Kelly Christopher “KC” Amos in a statement obtained by Variety on Tuesday. “He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.”

He went on, “My father loved working as an actor throughout his entire life … most recently in ‘Suits LA’ playing himself and our documentary about his life journey as an actor, ‘America’s Dad.’ He was my dad, my best friend, and my hero. Thank you for your prayers and support at this time.”

Born on December 27, 1939, in Newark, New Jersey, John Amos began his career far from the entertainment industry. After earning a degree in sociology from Colorado State University, he pursued athletics and worked as a social worker before finding his calling in acting. His entry into show business came through stand-up comedy and theater, where his charisma and commanding presence quickly drew attention. This led to his first television role on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, where he played the affable weatherman Gordy Howard, marking the beginning of a successful and groundbreaking career.

Amos’s most notable role came as James Evans Sr. on the 1970s sitcom Good Times, where he played a steadfast and loving father in a working-class Black family. His performance brought depth and dignity to the character, making him an enduring figure in American television and a beloved part of a greater cultural shift happening across mediums. Amos also earned acclaim for his work in the miniseries Roots, in which he played the adult Kunta Kinte, a role that cemented his status as a versatile and impactful actor. In film, he starred in classics like Coming to America and Die Hard 2, proving that on top of talent, he had persistent range.
