Mississippi Moves to Implement Purple Alert System for Missing Individuals with Cognitive Disabilities

Mississippi is on the verge of becoming one of just two states to establish a special alert notification system designed to raise public awareness about missing individuals with cognitive disabilities. The new system, dubbed the Purple Alert, aims to provide an additional layer of protection for some of the state’s most vulnerable residents.

Despite ongoing disagreements in the Mississippi House of Representatives and Senate over healthcare and education funding, there was unanimous support for House Bill 873, which introduces the Purple Alert system. The bill’s passage reflects a shared commitment among lawmakers to enhance safety measures for individuals with special needs, such as those with autism and Down syndrome.

The Purple Alert system will function similarly to the well-known Amber and Silver Alerts. When a person with cognitive disabilities goes missing, local law enforcement will report the case to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI). The MBI will then issue an alert notification to law enforcement agencies, the media, and the public, ensuring widespread awareness and a coordinated search effort.

Mika Hartman, a parent from the Mississippi Gulf Coast whose son has Down syndrome, highlighted the critical need for such an alert system. Many individuals with cognitive disabilities, particularly children, are prone to bolting and can quickly become lost. These individuals often face significant challenges in communicating their situation and are at a higher risk of exploitation.

“Doing this Purple Alert just gives this sense of relief for families like mine in knowing that there are protections out there should we need to call for help,” Hartman told SuperTalk Mississippi News.

If HB 873 is signed into law, Mississippi will become only the second state with a Purple Alert system. This move would mark a significant step forward in safeguarding individuals with cognitive disabilities, providing peace of mind for their families and enhancing community preparedness.

By implementing the Purple Alert system, Mississippi is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of some of its most vulnerable citizens.
